Partnering with Grebban, we created a digital flagship store to enable expansion.
Background
Humans Since 1982 was founded in 2009 and is still led by Per Emanuelsson (CEO) and Bastian Bischoff (Creative Director), who met during their studies at HDK-Valand, the Swedish Academy of Design & Crafts. Inspired by a trip to the Art Basel and Design show in Miami, they embarked on a joint venture to explore how to merge design and art. The duo began experimenting with patterns of randomly fallen toothpicks and devised an animated font system based on moving clock faces, leading to the creation of the Clock Clock. “What fascinated us was this idea of ‘designing time’ and using time as a factor when creating objects,” says Bastian. Today, Humans Since 1982 has evolved into a global luxury brand, with a client base spanning cities like London, New York, Zürich, Miami, Paris, and many more.
Challenges
The main challenge was to enter the digital commerce space as well as reposition as an international luxury brand. Balancing the artistic legacy with the demands of e-commerce required a unique integration of design, technology, and commerce.
Being shown in great galleries and studios around the world the all over goal was to give the art pieces an equally great space and experience, but in a digital context - a digital flagship gallery and store! The main challenge was to enter the digital commerce space as well as re-position as an international luxury brand. Balancing their artistic legacy with the demands of e-commerce required a unique integration of design, technology, and commerce. How do you create an e-commerce experience for a customer purchasing artwork valued at €339,700? How can you effectively communicate the legacy, provenance, and technology behind the pieces? Additionally, how do you instil a sense of security and confidence in the customer before their purchase? These were some of the critical questions we aimed to address.

Humans since 1982 entrusted Grebban to bring their vision of a new digital flagship store to life as both a design and technical partner for their new Shopify store. With a clear business direction from Humans since 1982, paired with Grebban’s expert recommendations, we guided key decisions to delicately modernize and adjust their brand for the digital nature, scale their online business, modernise their Shopify stack and designed a brand new online flagship store experience. The project encompassed a comprehensive approach, including a digital identity, UX/UI design, development, and strategic support within the e-commerce space, ensuring a seamless and enhanced experience across all touch points.
Create an immersive digital flagship store that captivates luxury customers while addressing communication challenges to convey the brand's identity and product offerings. Develop a seamless, intuitive online shopping experience that guides users to easily discover and purchase both smaller artworks directly and larger masterpieces via inquiry. Art direct additional communication assets to enhance e-commerce, defining necessary images and videos to craft engaging narratives around the products. Collaboration with both internal teams and external partners, including in-house 3D creative Sasha, ensured a cohesive and sophisticated approach throughout the design process.

Process
Collaborating closely with founders Bastian Bischoff and Per Emanuelsson, as well as their in-house team, fostered a dynamic exchange of knowledge that enabled everyone to excel in their areas of expertise.
To ignite our collaboration, we ensured a strong understanding and alignment within the working group regarding the collaboration’s goals, vision, purpose, and the KPIs to be achieved. Following this, a joint visual direction and UX research, combined with customer journey mapping, ensured that HS82’s core values were reflected in the design. This approach also empowered their team with insights that built confidence before the design process began.
Next, we engaged in extensive research and conceptual exploration, along with design production, all of which led to a visual direction that enhanced HS82’s e-commerce platform, tailored to meet their audience’s needs. Throughout the process, we maintained close collaboration, ensuring that each design iteration aligned with HS82’s vision. By running design and technology development in parallel, we ensured quick progress and seamless integration between teams, ultimately delivering a cohesive, user-centric e-commerce experience that supported HS82’s growth as a brand and as a business.
Solution
From this insight, we developed a design concept that balanced simplicity with unique details to create a memorable expression with minimal means, while securing both ease of discovery and conversion.
Humans Since 1982 has a product that captures viewers' attention, providing a poetic, full sensory experience. With the goal of establishing the studio as an international brand—beyond just an art studio—we focused on commerce while remaining true to the brand’s artistic roots and its tonality: pure, precise, immersive.
As the brand toolkit and overall design aesthetics were reduced and minimal, we sought slightly offbeat elements, one of which was a bottom-placed header and main navigation that added a surprising touch to the design. Overall, we leaned on simple layouts that showcased the content and employed modernistic typographic choices, specifically Unica 77 from Lineto. We also used the mono version for titles and measurements to add a subtle detail and create hierarchies leading the eye.
This design concept and design strategy allow Humans Since 1982 to authentically express its unique character, resonating with the right clientele that includes Fortune 500 companies, boutique hotels, celebrities, art collectors, museums, and private clients—typically ultra-high-net-worth or high-net-worth individuals with high expectations for a stand-out customer experience.
01. Digital Identity
We modernized the brand and adapted it to thrive in the digital landscape. We developed a unified system, defined treatments, and established a set of guidelines that ensures consistency across all digital platforms. This approach helps the brand present a cohesive and professional identity, ultimately enhancing its recognition and connection with the target audience. By focusing on these elements, we positioned the brand for long-term success.
02. E-com design
We developed a distinct yet reduced and delicate e-com design for the new flagship store, that secured both discovery, sophistication and conversion throughout the purchasing journey. There was a need for clear direction that communicates the value of the products and the technology behind and its features, making it easier for customers to understand the value proposition and connect with the brand.
03. Art Direction
Recognising the need for additional visual assets to enhance the existing materials, we art-directed a hero video and created communication assets during a photoshoot in their art and production studio. This to make sure we had the assets needed to create a memorable brand experience for Humans since 1982. By collaborating closely with their team, we captured the essence of the brand, highlighting its unique story and artistry.

Platform & Technology
Together, we chose Shopify as the e-commerce platform, tailoring its architecture and integrating essential services to support the studio's ambitious growth plans.
With Grebban's extensive platform expertise and dedicated Shopify developers, we created a custom theme that fully utilizes the Shopify ecosystem with a highly native approach. Integrations with Salesforce and Mailchimp were implemented. The overall strategy aimed to minimize running costs while maintaining high quality, enabling manual curation of product listings and offering complete flexibility in defining meta fields for varying product specifications.
Technical products require precise specifications, and to keep clients secure and informed before purchase, we developed a modular system for detailing these specifications, allowing the in-house team to describe all aspects of the products. Additionally, we designed and implemented a feature to display product-specific FAQs, further ensuring that customers are well-informed about each art piece.

Our roots lie in the world of experimental design and art. This creative, playful, and exploratory side of ours has been key to shaping who we are today. However, over the past two years, we've also focused on the other side of the same coin: establishing ourselves as a luxury brand for collectible design and art.
Why did you choose Grebban?
We conducted a thorough comparison of four top agencies in Europe, using an extensive evaluation matrix. In the end, Grebban scored the highest.
Can you share any feedback and/or reactions you've received from your customers about the new site?
I’m very impressed with the professionality of the look as it is right now, really really good job on content and design. I also think the site does a great job of communicating the realism of the product and professionality of the studio. Beautiful and well structured sums it up. Well done.
How would you describe your experience working with our team & Grebban in general during the project?
Me and my colleagues who were in touch with people from Grebban were very impressed about how profesional, kind and calm everyone at Grebban was. Even in more stressful situations. There actually were almost no stressful situations due to great project management. We experienced dealing with amazing talents, each in his/her realm, each one shown amazing people skills and very humane behaviour.
What aspects of our collaboration stood out to you in terms of communication and responsiveness?
I loved the MoSCoW workshops and spreadsheets, how you use Slack and Asana for clear communication and project management. That was inspiring and really worked. Also that you have Petter as a project manager who is always here to help and coordinate was amazing.
How has the new site contributed to you overall business strategy and goals?
We have seen a doubling of conversion since the launch of the website. The website is the nr.1 touchpoint for our brand, where we fascinate and educate our clients. With the great analytic tools in Shopify, we really work much more data driven now.
can you point to ny measurable outcomes, such as increased sales, customer retention, or improved brand perception, that resulted from our collaboration?
Just within the first month after launch we grew sales by 60% and doubled the conversion rate. And for a long term perspective we’re convinced it will build credibility and trust towards business partners, clients & also press!
